Although I’ve had dark moments, the title of this show doesn’t necessarily reflect my
current state of mind or spirit. It’s more an observation of the state of the world. I feel
that individually, and as a culture, we would do well to contemplate our habits, beliefs
and actions in order to determine their worth. Do they contribute to the good of humanity;
do they make the world a better place? Or are we mindlessly detrimental to the people
and places that surround us?
My work explores the systems and symbols we use to explain the world in which we live.
We make lists, we diagram, we write manuals and make maps. We theorize. We
subscribe to various religious beliefs. We tell stories and interpret our dreams. The
logical conscious and the intuitive subconscious each have their preferred methods.
A favorite of the subconscious and of mine is symbolism within ancient myths, folk
tales and religious literature. The characters and circumstances from these old stories
have transcended time, making the journey from ancient history to modern times through
layers of change. Each icon embodies vast amounts of meaning. They continue to show
up in our modern lives in a variety of guises, infiltrating our dreams and stories, our
advertising and clichés. It’s a kind of cultural shorthand, but also a way of attempting to
make logical sense out of the unexplainable.
This work looks both at the inner, intuitive landscape and the outer, logical landscape.
I’m examining various human attempts to create order of the universe, and trying to
determine of what a modern, cumulative, everyday mythology might consist.
The series Epic is a visual story broken up into fifteen chapters. It tells the story of a
journey with specific events taking place in the midst of recurring themes. The literary
equivalent would be similar to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
